Eaton has launches a new UPS system for data centers serving small and medium businesses that is capable to alerting a variety of virtualization platforms that a server connected to it is reaching capacity or needs to be shut down. The alert prompts the virtualization management solution to shift virtual workloads to a different server.

The new 5PX UPS models range from 1,000VA to 3,000 VA and start at US$475. At the moment, the product is only available in North America.

The system is capable of communicating with virtualization platforms because it is integrated with Eaton’s Intelligent Power Software Suite, which combines power monitoring with graceful shutdown of devices of live VM migration.

The shutdown modules are compatible with VMware’s vCenter Server, Microsoft SCVMM, Red Hat KVM and Citrix and OpenSource Xen Servers virtualization platforms.

The software enables IT managers to configure it to trigger automatic relocation of VMs whenever 5PX indicates that connected servers are reaching maximum capacity or to gracefully shut down servers connected to the UPS.

Hervé Tardy, senior VP and general manager of Eaton’s Distributed Power Quality division, said in a statement the new UPS product’s features would help IT managers make better decisions within virtualized environments. "The 5PX also improves IT system uptime and assists with energy conservation goals."
