Eaton has announced that its 9PX lithium-ion uninterruptable power supply (UPS) is now available with a 6 kVA power rating.

The UPS model is available immediately with a five-year warranty and is the latest addition to Eaton's 9 series single-phase double-conversion UPS line.

Available in rackmount and tower form factors, the 9PX 6 kVA lithium-ion UPS has the same features as the lead-acid UPS including load segments, remote power on and off, and output relay ports, as well as being around 40 percent lighter than the lead-acid equivalent.

The 9PX 6 kVA lithium-ion UPS is mainly targeted at Edge environments, with applications for education, small retail, and other verticals, and can integrate with HCI and virtualization platforms.

Eaton predicts that the battery-based UPS will have a life span of 8-10 years, but this can be extended by adding up to four 2U extended battery modules.

Lithium-ion battery technology is popular in distributed Edge locations. The long-life span means that they can be set up and left without needing regular visits for upgrades or replacements, ideal for locations where there are fewer workers or those with less frequent access.

Clients who use the 9PX lithium-ion UPS line include Microsoft, who used the UPSs to share energy with the local grid in Dublin in 2022, a solution the company is now looking to roll out worldwide.

Eaton was founded in 1911 and is a power management company. In 2022 the company reported revenues of $20.8 billion, with the company CEO, Craig Arnold, saying in the earnings call that he was not worried about a potential slowing in the data center market and that Eaton thinks "the data center market is going to be a great market for quite a number of years to come."

Earlier this year, Eaton acquired a 49 percent stake in Chinese power distribution firm, Jiangsu Ryan Electrical, a manufacturer of dry-type transformers.
