Digital Realty Trust (DRT) is keeping good to its promise and increasing its footprint in Asia with a data center it said could cost up to A$350m in Sydney - it’s first build for the continent.

It follows its November 18 announcement which highlighted its plans to purchase its first Asian data center in Singapore - a 375,500 sq ft data center in the international Business Park in Jurong East for SGD$170m.

DRT also appointed its first head for Asia Pacific Kris Kumar, who is based in Singapore and positioned to carry out DRT projects in Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong and India.

Kumar told The Australian newspaper yesterday that he expects the Asia Pacific to contribute 10% of DRT’s growth in coming years.

DRT has also been pushing Kumar’s profile, putting him forward as a spokesperson on a number of its major global forecasts. Just this week it released a press release highlighting his views on what 2011 would hold for the data center industry  - reduced expenditure for major market, reductions in energy consumption and an increasing demand for innovation.

DRT’s Sydney data center will follow a number of projects that have been announced for the region in recent times, including colocation player Equinix, NEXTDC and Global Switch.

It is planned to be established in the second quarter of next year, according to The Australian’s report. Singapore is expected to be up in running by the end of the first quarter of 2011.

Kumar told The Australian DRT has US$800m (A$832m) of revolving credit it can draw from for purchases in the region.

"Across Asia-Pacific we would like to see US$1bn deployed [in the next few years. Between US$250m and US$250m of that, at a minimum, will be for Austarlia . . . if not more," Kumar said.

DRT currently has a bid in with fellow investment firm Macquarie Capital for the NSW government consolidation project.

DRT acts as both a data center investment, development, construction and real estate firm and has its largest presence in the North America and Europe.
