Data center developer and provider of wholesale data center space Digital Realty Trust bought a fully-leased 2.74MW data center in a suburb of California's capital Sacramento.

Digital paid US$30m to Telecom Real Estate Services (the seller) for the 69,000 sq ft facility in Rancho Cordova, the company said Thursday. Scott Peterson, Digital's chief acquisitions officer, said the facility was near its existing property in the town.

"The property is located near our 3065 Gold Camp data center facility, expanding our presence in the Sacramento market and contributing to our revenue stream with a long term, stabilized lease," Peterson said.

The data center was recently renovated, including improvements to UPS and HVAC infrastructure, new roof and new fuel, building management, security and fire-suppression systems.

The Sacramento region is one of the emerging North American data center markets Tier1 Research recently identified as poised for growth. Since there are relatively few data center players in Sacramento (Tier1 identified 12 providers with a total of 285,000 sq ft of operational floor space), Digital's acquisition gives it a substantial gain in market share.

According to Tier1, the dominant player in Sacramento is RagingWire, which has more than 40% of the market's total inventory.
