US-based wholesale data center provider Digital Realty Trust has granted a Silicon Valley power provider the right to use land parcel on the property of its data center park in Santa Clara, California, to build a new substation to support the power needs of its data center customers and others.

The 65MW substation called "Kenneth" will be built by Silicon Valley Power, a utility operated by the City of Santa Clara, on a parcel that is part of DRT’s data center campus on Space Park Drive. It is expected to come online by early 2011.

Larry Owens, manager of customer services at SVP, said the substation will provide power to DRT’s data center customers as well as other users in the area. "To meet the needs of our data center customers and other enterprise consumers, we allocate new power through the development of these substations based on load growth forecasts and the density of certain areas," Owens said in a statement.

DRT CEO Michael Foust called the deal a "win-win" for the company’s customers and for the power provider.

DRT has two facilities on Space Park Dr., one in operation (about 168,000 sq ft) and another one still under construction (about 60,000 sq ft).
