Digital Realty Trust has upgraded electrical and mechanical systems at its 365 Main data center in San Francisco to expand capacity for new and existing customers.
Danny Johnson, director of technical operations at Digital, said the company had added 900kW to the facility’s overall capacity, bringing it to a total of 8,650kW. Along with new power capacity, Digital also increased the amount of raised floor available at the site, adding about 3,000 sq ft spread over three halls.
Raul Saavedra, Digital’s senior asset manager, said there was plenty of demand for data center space in San Francisco but the 365 Main facility was nearly full.
“It was full for quite some time, which is one of the reasons digital bought the building,” he said. “We needed to create more power to be able to satisfy demand.”
The company’s other two properties in the city, 360 Spear and 200 Paul, are 100% and about 90% occupied, respectively, Saavedra said.
The data center at 365 Main was part of the portfolio of properties Digital bought in 2010 from Rockwood Capital for US$725m. Other properties in the portfolio included two more data centers in California, one in Arizona and one in Virginia, as well as about 250,000 sq ft of undeveloped land in Arizona.
