Maldives telecoms company Dhiraagu has launched a new data center.

The company this week announced the launch of its third facility, located in N. Velidhoo, Maldives.

Specifications weren’t shared, but the company said it was a Tier III-level facility.

The inauguration ceremony was jointly officiated by CEO & MD of Dhiraagu, Ismail Rasheed, and the president of Velidhoo Island Council, Athif Hussain.

“The data center will enable businesses, including resorts and enterprises operating in the region, to securely host and safeguard their data closer to their operations. It will also enhance the resilience and efficiency of cloud-based services and critical applications, support business continuity, and provide greater convenience for customers across the atolls,” the company said.

Dhiraagu was launched in 1988 as the sole telecommunication service provider in the Maldives. The company’s two major shareholders are Beyon (52 percent) and the Government of the Maldives (41.8 percent).

Dhiraagu is the landing partner for the upcoming SeaMeWe-6 cable, which landed in the Maldives in August last year. The telco is also a landing partner for the DSCoM subsea cable, which, in collaboration with Ooredoo, connects eight islands across the Maldives.

The telco launched a facility in Hulhumalé, a reclaimed artificial island, earlier this year.

Qatari telco Ooredoo built a data center in Hulhumalé in March 2021.
