Dell announced a containerized data center solution for the military Wednesday.

The company designed the Tactical Mobile Data Center for transport by air and quick deployments in remote areas. The complete solution consists of two containers: one for IT and the other for power and cooling.

Joe Ayers, VP and GM at Dell Federal, said many of Dell’s military and government customers needed to deploy IT infrastructure quickly in places such as outposts in Afghanistan or areas struck by natural disasters.

“In today’s operational environment in order to have access to the tools and information most organizations need to accomplish their mission, they must also have a robust IT infrastructure, and we’ve designed this solution specifically to meet the needs of these very special customers,” Ayers said.

The IT container is called “IT Pack”. The standard ISU-96 container includes three 42U 15kW server racks, power distribution units and a variety of data connections (fiber, copper or BNC).

The AC/UPS Pack (the mechanical-electrical container) includes a glycol closed-loop cooling system, battery backup and power-conditioning systems.

It can operate on regular utility power, generator power or both.

The solution includes fire suppression, automatic back-up ventilation, video monitoring, temperature, humidity and airflow controls and an alerting system, among other management features.

It is 3G Flight certified, which makes it transportable by military fixed-wing airframes or commercial aircraft.
