Peter Panfil from Vertiv says data center operators shouldn’t base their purchasing decisions on tabloid headlines

Lithium-ion batteries for data center applications are safer than customers might think, according to Peter Panfil, vice president for the Global Power business at Vertiv (formerly Emerson Network Power).

Panfil says customers should disregard news about exploding phones and hoverboards, since those cells rely on different chemistry. He adds that Li-Ion can bring considerable benefits over traditional VRLA batteries, including smaller size, lower weight and longer life. And while the initial cost will be higher, TCO over a long period of time might actually be lower.

The conversation took place at the DCD Enterprise show in New York, which concluded last week.
