The Norwich Research Park in the UK is set to host a new data center.
Located in Colney Lane, the new single-story data center will be built within the John Innes Centre, according to a report from Norwich Evening News.
The John Innes Centre was originally built in the 1960s and will be demolished and rebuilt to accommodate the data center, laboratory, and office space.
The new data center will span more than 1,100 sqm (11,840 sq ft), though further details have not yet been shared.
Construction will begin soon, with completion slated for the beginning of 2026.
Professor Neil Hall, director of the Earlham Institute, said: “Once completed, the shared data center will be one of the most powerful high-performance computing systems for bioscience anywhere in the UK. It’ll cement the region’s status as the best place to conduct data-intensive bioscience.
“The Norwich Research Park is home to a number of world-leading research institutes, where talented scientists are using cutting-edge technology to ask important scientific questions. All this research generates huge amounts of data, which - if properly stored and managed - will lead to breakthroughs.”
He added that the facility will redistribute waste heat to heat other buildings on site.
The Norwich Research Park spans 230 hectares and is one of five campuses funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. The campus is home to four research institutes; John Innes Centre, Quadrum Institute, Earlham Institute, and the Sainsbury Laboratory.
