A three-story data center has been proposed for a 795-acre parcel of farmland in south Joliet, Illinois.

According to local media outlet, Shaw Local, an annexation agreement will go to the Joliet Plan Commission on October 16 for a recommendation, although a date for a vote on the proposal has not been set.

The report went on to note that the vote won’t go ahead until the developer – HW Technology Park Development LLC, a division of Texas-based Hillwood Development Company – and the city have worked out issues for a potential development agreement.

These include answering questions about how much electricity and water the data center would consume, Dustin Anderson, Joliet director of community development, told the news outlet.

As well as 24 data center-related buildings, the plans include the construction of a ComEd substation at the site, the cost of which will be covered by HW Technology. No information about the proposed capacity of the data center has been disclosed.

The first buildings are slated for construction in 2027, the report said.

The data center will border Schweitzer Road on the north and Millsdale Road on the south, and be situated near a planned warehouse business park by NorthPoint Development, which has faced opposition from residents in the area, Shaw Local noted.

Joliet is located around 40 miles southwest of Chicago, and south of Aurora, both of which are Illinois's major data center markets.

This year so far has seen several data center proposals for the Chicago region, including two large campuses in Yorkville with a total of 38 data center buildings.
