Canadian data center service provider Peer 1 Hosting signed a multi-year colocation deal with Capgemini Canada, a consulting and outsourcing service provider. The client is taking a full "POD" in the provider's new flagship data center in Toronto. The agreement was signed for five years, with options to renew and expand the amount of space used.
The new $40m facility measures 40,000 sq ft total. Peer 1 uses the data center to provide managed hosting, dedicated hosting and colocation services. One POD is about one quarter of the facility, being built out in four phases (one POD per phase). Each POD supports about 270 cabinets or about 7,500 servers.
NetApp announced support for Intel's 10GbE server adapters
Storage vendor NetApp said Thursday it will start supporting Intel Ethernet X520 family of SFP+10 Gigabit Ethernet server adapters, extending its ecosystem of tested Ethernet solutions. The move gives NetApp customers more ways to deploy an FCoE infrastructure.
NetApp's unified storage solutions allow customers to take a "phased approach" to data center consolidation around Ethernet by supporting their existing Fibre Channel assets in addition to FCoE, iSCSI and NAS.
IBM to open cloud computing school at Polish university
IBM has teamed up with a Polish university to build a cloud computing center in the country. The Wroclaw University of Technology, where the center is going to be located, will create an academic curriculum that includes cloud-focused courses. The cloud curriculum will be mainly based on IBM Tivoli Software.
The Wroclaw university is the first institution to join IBM's Multipurpose Cloud Computing Center initiative, a global program established this year and available to all higher-education institutions. The aim is to support the universities and to base all daily work within the center on cloud computing solutions.
Vycon, a maker of flywheel systems for energy storage, announced a sale of 7MW of flywheel capacity to a Fortune 500 company's data center in the northeast of the US. The company's VDC-XE flywheel systems will be used with UPS systems.
According to the supplier's news release, the customer purchased the flywheel solutions as part of its green initiatives, since the flywheel approach is considered to be more environmentally friendly than lead-acid batteries. At the client's data center, the system will be combined with on-line double-conversion UPS technology, which can achieve up to 98 percent efficiency.
Profitability.net deploys Extreme Networks 10GbE products to support cloud services
Network vendor Extreme Networks announced on Thursday a deal with colocation service provider Profitability.net, which will deploy Extreme's networking solutions in its data center to support its upcoming cloud-based service Appica.com. The platform will provide public and private Infrastructure-as-a-Service products.
Profitability.net has purchased Extreme's Summit X650 top-of-rack switches for all server racks in its data center to enabled copper-based 10GbE connectivity to attach iSCSI-based SAN. The customer is also deploying Extreme's Summit X450 switches for Gigabit server aggregation.
