A solar-powered data center has become the latest member to join a Canadian project created to develop and provide more sustainable data center services. A Calgary data center operated by a the security and networking solutions provider Cybera has become a node in the GreenStar Network of data centers that will use power generated by renewable energy sources, according to a Scientific Computing report.
The current plan is to have five small data centers participate in the network, each using wind, hydroelectric or solar energy sources. Since most renewable energy sources are intermittent, IT workloads will be transferred between the participating facilities, depending on availability of power at each of the facilities at any given moment.
Continuum expands data center in Chicago suburb
Data center service provider Continuum Data Centers has completed construction of the second phase of its facility in the Chicago, Ill., area. The company has added 14,000 sq ft of data center space to its data center in the City of Lombard, responding to growing demand for space in the region.
Continuum opened the first phase of the facility in August 2009. According to a company news release, the first phase has reached capacity.
VMware releases Hyperic 4.4 for comprehensive application performance monitoring
Virtualization technology company VMware has released a new solution that allows IT administrators to monitor virtualized environments. SpringSource Hyperic 4.4 integrates VMware vCenter Server, maintaining a continually updated inventory of vSphere ESXi and ESX hosts, enabling administrators to more quickly correct and prevent application performance issues.
The solution is designed to allow administrators to monitor their physical, virtual and private-cloud infrastructures. According to VMware, increased deployment of applications across virtual and cloud infrastructures has created new demand from application operators for visibility into application performance.
NetApp integrates unified storage with Symantec API to boost storage efficiency
Storage vendor NetApp has integrated its unified storage systems with Thin Reclamation API by the provider of security solutions Symantec. The new features aim to help SAN operators reclaim storage space and improve storage efficiency automatically.
The solution enables the users to manage, reduce and reclaim storage space throughout the entire data lifecycle. Improvements in storage efficiency can translate to reductions in demand for data center power, cooling and space.
Emerson opens demonstration data center in Sydney
Emerson Network Power has opened a small data center in Sydney, Australia, which will be used to demonstrate the company's infrastructure solutions while serving its Australia and New Zealand operations. The facility is equipment with a full range of Emerson's data center infrastructure products.
The facility provides about 1,300 sq ft of data center space, showcasing Emerson's power protection and management systems, precision cooling, fully-integrated racks, remote monitoring and system-management solutions.
