CyrusOne has purchased 40 acres of land in Chandler, Arizona, to build a 1m sq ft data center.

CyrusOne largely services Fortune 500 companies and has been aggressively building out in recent years.

According to Arizona news organization AZCentral, CyrusOne paid US$12.5m to Capital Commercial Investments for the site.

It plans on starting construction on the data center next year, with the first phase, covering 350,000 sq ft, earmarked for completion in late 2012 or early 2013.

Once fully built, the data center will be the largest in the region, which is already home to Digital Realty Trust and PayPal, among others.

According to Chandler director of economic development Christine Mackay CyrusOne’s main criteria for site selection was price.

"Price corridor seemed to remain at the top of their list;they were impressed with the technology and infrastructure that existed," Mackay said.

CyrusOne is a subsidiary of telecommunications company Cincinnati Bell, which acquired CyrusOne last June. CyrusOne has since been expanding its footprint, both in the US and abroad, with a new European operation based in London.

Cincinnati Bell said it was looking for new revenue streams and has committed funding for CyrusOne’s growth.
