CyrusOne has bought 22 acres of land in Austin's MetCenter business park to build a data center on.

The data center provider already has about 55,000 sq ft of colocation space in the Texas city but wants to expand its presence there, as well as elsewhere in its home state. The company currently owns 920,000 sq ft of building space in Texas, about 560,000 sq ft of which is data center capacity, located in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio in addition to Austin.

CyrusOne bought 54 acres of land in San Antonio and Houston in 2013. It owned 24 acres in the Dallas area.

Gary Wojtaszek, the company's president and CEO, said its property in Texas is capable of yielding an additional 2.5m sq ft of gross building space and 1.6m sq ft of data center capacity – tripling the company's current inventory in the state.

“Securing the ownership of 100 acres in Texas markets where we already have a strong presence allows for construction of what we believe is the largest multi-facility interconnected data center platform in the country,” he said.

In 2013, CyrusOne launched an internet exchange across all of its Texas data centers with plans to expand it nationally. The interconnection enables its customers to replicate IT infrastructure across multiple locations for continuity.

“For example, the CyrusOne platform connects our high-performance computing Houston data center ... to our other facilities in cities such as San Antonio and Austin for backup and replication,” Wojtaszek said.

The company has been deeply involved in the establishment of Open-IX, a non-profit organization launched late in 2013 that has devised a set of standards for internet exchanges and data centers that host them. The organization endorses exchanges and host facilities if they satisfy its standards with the goal of fostering viable alternatives to internet exchanges in the US currently dominated by the data center provider Equinix and a few others.

CyrusOne has said that it plans to have its data centers and its exchange endorsed.
