CyrusOne held a ‘breaking ground’ ceremony today to mark the start of construction of a second data center at its Phoenix Campus in Chandler, Arizona.

The new building will be 60,000 sq ft white floor space at full build, with up to 12MW of power.

Kevin Timmons, CTO at CyrusOne, said demand for data center services in the western regions of the US is so strong it needed a second facility.

The Phoenix data center is aimed at local Fortune 1000 companies looking for a ‘safe home’.

According to Arizona state representative Jeff Dial, Arizona is a low-risk area for seismic activity, tornadoes, and hurricanes.

“We also offer CyrusOne and its customers a robust fiber network, competitive electricity rates, low-latency connectivity to West Coast cities and a highly educated technology workforce,” Dial said.

The expansion adds to the 77,500sq ft of space already commissioned to serve as a Western regional hub for Fortune 1000 enterprise customers.

This new building is due to be finished at the end of 2014. After completion of the second site, the campus will have room for seven more data center facilities.

CyrusOne has colocation facilities in the US, London, and Singapore.
