It is a large claim to make but a new AU$44 million (US$39.29 million) data center in Brisbane says it believes it could be the most energy efficient in Australia, and it says it has the figures to prove it.
Situated at the Brisbane Airport Precinct, the iseek data center, which spans 2500 sq m - 1000 sq m of which is colocation space - has not surprisingly attracted a number of high-end travel companies.
And being just 20 minutes from Brisbane City's financial hub, and the city's docks, financial services and food processing customers have also signed up and, according to iseek, the public sector is also showing interest.
The facility manages its energy consumption using PUE ratings, with a circuit monitoring all power connections in the facility, according to iseek corporate communications manager Peter Joynson. It claims to have a PUE rating of 1.3 ÔÇô one of the lowest for any data center in Australia.
"The iSeek DC has created a new and exciting benchmark for data centers in the area of energy efficiency by achieving a 1.3 PUE rating by the Green Grid ÔÇô one of the lowest power usage indexes in Australia," iSeek says in its sales brochure.
The center has used a range of building innovations, from thermal insulation to non-penetrable roofing to help it achieve its standards, while maintaining high security levels. Throughout the entire structure, according to iseek, energy efficiency has been taken into according. It feature hot/cold aisle configurations as well as a building management system to monitor and administer electrical and mechanical systems in the building itself and uses free cooling from BMS.
"The iseek DC is one of Australia's first data centers to make use of free cooling," iseek says in its sales brochure.
It also collects 97% of its roof water and 10% of its air conditioning condensate, which is then put back into the Brisbane Airport Corporation's reservoir system.
It is not all about energy efficiency though. Iseek's third and largest data center is also in a prime spot to meet with the dangers posed by Brisbane's wild and regular electrical storms. Iseek has, hence, installed a high-tech lightening detection system, and ensured that its data center is not radioactive. ERITECH System 3,000 lightening protection offers innovations with earth grid and clamp technologies that can disperse lightning strikes as well as monitor lightning activity to ensure power surges do not put data at risk.
The center is Tier III rated in terms of redundancy and features N+1 redundancy and a backup fuel tank that can run the center for 48 hours. It is also powered by two separate33kV underground feeds. It connects to a fully redundant metropolitan fiber ring, providing Ethernet and xWDM services, and is multi-carrier enabled, connecting to Optus/Uecomm, Telstra and Pipe/TPG.
Inside the data center offers a maximum power of 20kWper rack with an average of 6kW a rack and has 10 gigabytes of network capacity.
While iseek says it is not 100% sure as its status as the most energy efficient in Australia, it is known that it has the highest capacity of any offering in the Capital of Queensland. And the iseek Brsibane Airport data center's ideal location, close to the city and in a hub were 24x7 operations can be ensured with remote and standby emergency response offered not only by iseek but the Brisbane Airport Corporation, there is little surprise iseek is predicting that much of its space will be rented in a number of months.
