US colocation and peering provider CoreSite has received LEED Gold certification for the green design for the first of four planned data centers in Santa Clara.
 
It managed to run with a PUE (power usage effectiveness) of 1.3 at the campus for the last year, which according to CoreSite makes it one of the most efficient data centers in California that measure by the rating.
 
The 101,000 sq ft data center at 2972 Stender way was built by MATT Construction and uses unterruptible power supplies (UPS) and engineering technologies by Mtsubishi Electric.
 
The building uses free cooling and variable speed fans and zone lighting among other energy efficient measures.
 
The LEED ratings are managed by the US Green Building Council
 
CoreSite has plans to construct an additional 345,000 sq ft in the San Francisco Bay area depending upon market conditions.
 
The company also received the 2011 Energy Innovator award from energy provider Silicon Valley Power for its efforts to bring energy use down in the data center and to support the use of renewable energy.
 
SVP said CoreSite’s energy efficient air temperature design at its newest data center will save an estimated 6m kW hours a year – enough to power 6,750 homes for a month.
 
CoreSite has more than 2million sq ft of data center space held for redevelopment and development and has 11 data centers in the US.
