Core Scientific has secured more capacity for its AI/HPC data center development in West Texas.

The company is pivoting its Pecos campus from Bitcoin mining towards AI and HPC hosting. Currently offering 300MW of mining capacity, Core this week said it has secured an incremental 300MW of gross power capacity under contract with its utility provider as part of the site's repurposing.

Initial capacity for AI hosting is expected to go live in early 2027. The site is currently available for lease.

Core said it is also planning to develop a behind-the-meter solution, which is expected to provide “significant” additional capacity. Core Scientific has secured more than 200 acres of land to support this planned expansion.

The site will eventually reach 1.5GW of gross power, totaling 1GW of leasable capacity.

“We continue to leverage our deep in-house expertise to differentiate how we build and scale next-generation artificial intelligence infrastructure, further illustrated by our behind-the-meter solution at our Pecos campus,” said Adam Sullivan, CEO of Core Scientific. "By expanding in a market where we already control power, infrastructure, and operations, we can execute with speed to meet market demand.”

The site, currently hosting Cottonwood 1 & 2 developments, is located at 1939 Farm to Market 2119 in Reeves County and launched in 2022. It consists of multiple buildings and an on-site substation.

Founded in 2017, Core Scientific began as a cryptomine data center operator, but has now pivoted to AI data center development.

The company has secured CoreWeave as a major tenant across its data centers in Texas, Georgia, Oklahoma, and North Carolina.

Core Scientific also has projects in Pecos, Texas; Calvert City, Kentucky; Grand Forks, North Dakota; and Auburn, Alabama. In its last earnings report, Core Scientific said it has 520MW of leasable capacity at its existing sites, and another 700MW in unaccounted opportunities.
