GE unveiled its new Critical Power business unit Tuesday at the DatacenterDynamics Converged conference in New York City. The unit will provide end-to-end electrical solutions for data centers, hospitals, telecommunication networks and other mission-critical facilities.
Jeff Schnitzer, the new unit's general manager, said its focus would be to help clients improve energy consumption and drive down operating costs of critical-power equipment. “We support our customers from the front-end design through the life cycle of the equipment to help them realize the greatest benefit from their investment,” he said.
GE's critical-power business is headquartered in Plano, Texas, going after clients globally. Its portfolio includes power-switching products, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), DC energy systems and embedded power supplies, such as board-mounted power and front-end rectifiers.
The company has not yet added any products it has not already sold into the data center market, but the critical-power unit's focus will be combining these into full product-and-services solutions. GE said it would work with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to add devices to fill out the stack.
GE will also use its finance arm GE Capital to help customers finance their critical-power solutions. These will include customized financial lease programs and terms to support equipment upgrades and retrofits.
