A construction worker has been injured at the site of TSMC’s Arizona chip fab.
Fire crews responded to a rescue call at around 1.30pm on Monday, June 30, and according to local news reports, an unnamed male worker was taken to hospital in a “serious condition.”
The man is reported to have suffered broken bones; however, details of what caused the worker’s injuries are not currently known.
In a statement, TSMC said: “This afternoon, an Arizona site construction worker was in an accident and suffered broken bones. This person was treated on scene and promptly transported to the hospital for further treatment. We wish the injured worker a full and fast recovery. TSMC’s top priority is the safety and welfare of everyone who works on our site. We are in contact with our construction contractors and looking into this situation.”
The incident occurred just over a year after 41-year-old Cesar Anguiano-Guitron died in an explosion at TSMC’s Arizona plant, when a container of over-pressurized sulfuric acid exploded, causing Anguiano-Guitron to be hit by a blunt object and thrown 20 feet from the vehicle he was in.
Following his death, the Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health (ADOSH) issued TSMC with a fine of $16,131 for failing to keep the workplace free from hazards likely to cause death or serious harm.
The ADOSH’s inspection into TSMC also found workplace hazards, including the use of over-pressurization, exposure to harmful materials, and exposure to falling debris.
DCD's sympathies go out to the worker’s family, friends, and colleagues.
