A construction worker has died after being hit by a reversing crane lorry at the site of a data center construction project in Thailand.

Police said the dead man is Wang Jinghong, 36, a Chinese national who has been working on the data center in the Ban Chang district of the city of Rayong, in southeast Thailand.

According to local media reports, a ten-wheel vehicle fitted with a crane was being moved in front of the building when it reversed into the man, who had parked his motorcycle behind it after work hours.

Rescue workers and site staff spent 20 minutes trying to rescue the man, using a backhoe to lift the vehicle off him. He was taken to Ban Chang Hospital but died of his injuries.

The lorry driver and work-crew supervisor were reportedly taken into custody for questioning following the incident on September 3, but no charges have been filed, and a cause of death has yet to be established, pending an autopsy. Police officers in Ban Chang are working with the Chinese consulate to contact Wang’s relatives.

Uthai Saoman, an official who serves as Ban Chang sub-district headman, told local reporters that safety standards must be improved on data center construction sites, with more regular inspections being carried out.

The data center site where the incident occurred has not been named. Several digital infrastructure projects are currently underway in Rayong, some of which are being pursued by Chinese developers.

DCD sends its condolences to Wang's family, friends, and coworkers.
