Data center developer and provider Compass Datacenters has kicked off a construction project in Northborough, Massachusetts, for Iron Mountain, a company best known for its document-management business, which has recently entered the multi-tenant data center market as a provider.

Set to open its doors in early 2014, the data center will add to an existing campus of records storage centers the company maintains in Northborough (about 40 miles west of Boston). The company expects highly regulated organizations to find the site an attractive option for their information storage and management requirements.

Compass will build three of its standard data centers at the site, each providing 10,000 sq ft of raised floor and 1.2MW of IT load.

Iron Mountain plans to offer migration, networking, tape handling, IT asset tracking, disposition and other services in addition to data center capacity at the site.

Mark Kidd, senior VP and general manager of the company's new data center business, said, “Home to many highly-regulated organizations, the greater Boston area is underserved in terms of access to area data centers capable of meeting their unique needs. With security and compliance at the core of Iron Mountain's operations, those highly-regulated industries like healthcare, biotech and financial services can now choose a better-suited option for their data center operations.”
