Three data centers could be built in west London.

On October 2, Hillingdon Council, the local authority in the London Borough of Hillingdon, voted to approve planning permission for three data centers. The campus, being proposed by Colt DCS, will be built on a land parcel currently belonging to Hayes Bridge Retail Park and Heathrow Interchange, located on Uxbridge Road.

Proposals for the site show that it will be built in four phases. The first, third, and fourth phases concern the construction of the actual data center facilities, which will take up around 100,000 sqm (1,000,000 sq ft) of space. The three facilities, titled LON6, LON7, and LON8, will use a total of 73 diesel generators.

The second phase concerns an ‘Innovation Hub’ that will be used by the nearby Brunel University and the local community.

The application now goes to the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, who has a 14-day period starting from the Council’s decision to decide whether to allow, refuse, or take over the application.

Applicant Colt DCS currently operates two data centers in London: London North, which offers 35MW of capacity, and London West, which offers 9.4MW of capacity.

Colt DCS also has another campus undergoing construction in the borough of Hillingdon. The campus’ first phase, London 4, was topped out in May of last year and is set to go live in 2025, and its second, London 5, will begin construction sometime this year.

Founded in 1992 and originally known as City Of London Telecom, Colt was acquired by Fidelity Investments in August 2015. Including its facilities in London, it has 13 operational data centers with an additional nine in development across cities in the UK, Europe, and APAC.
