Cold Data Centre Services (Colt DCS) has acquired land in Chennai, India, for a new data center development.

The company this week announced the acquisition of a 10-acre plot in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Colt plans to deliver a data center in the Ambattur area of the city by 2027.

Richard Wellbrock, chief commercial officer at Colt DCS, said: "We view the Indian data center market as a significant opportunity for growth and remain dedicated to supporting its development. The establishment of our new site in Chennai doubles our commitment to this market, enabling us to better facilitate the expansion of our customers into this thriving region."

Colt announced plans to expand into India last year with a large campus in Mumbai. In September it then said it was building a second Indian campus in Chennai. At the time it said the 10-acre site would offer 120MW.

The Fidelity Investments-owned company said this would be the 18th Colt data center globally.

Pratap Mane, country head for India at Colt DCS, added: "Chennai has always been a strategically important location for us for our expansion plans in India, due to the presence of multiple cable landing stations and large enterprise businesses. The Tamil Nadu state government on its part has been very proactive and is keen to develop Chennai as the number one destination for data centers in India."

Colt is developing a 10-building campus in Navi Mumbai. The site will total 40 data halls and 40,000 sqm of data center white space across a 62,000 sqm site. The location’s total capacity will be 150MW, with 18MW available in phase one.

The likes of NTT, Web Werks, CtrlS, STT GDC, and Digital Realty are developing in Chennai, mostly in Ambattur.
