Canadian media and communications giant – and more recently a data center services provider – Cogeco Cable is planning to build its next data center in Montreal.

This will be a 100,000 sq ft facility in which the company is planning to invest CA$100m, The Montreal Gazette reports. Cogeco CEO Louis Audet announced the plan during a meeting at the Canadian Club of Montreal Wednesday.

Like other major Canadian metros, Montreal is a very active data center market. Major players like Cologix, Peer 1 Hosting, SunGard and Savvis, among others, all have facilities there.

During his speech at the Canadian Club, Audet also mentioned that Canada has been increasingly desireable as a data center location because of its geopolitical security.

Cogeco plans to open what will be its seventh data center in 2014. It will be operated by subsidiary Cogeco Data Services, which also operates five data centers in the Toronto metro and one in Vancouver.

Some of its data center capacity Cogeco gained through acquisition of Quiettouch in 2011 and some through its own construction, but the most recent expansion of its inventory came in June of this year, when it announced addition of another Toronto data center.

Bucking the trend of colocation companies building data centers outside the downtown core of major metros, Cogeco built the facility right in Toronto’s business district.
