Cobalt Data Centers has launched the first of two data centers it plans to open in Las Vegas, the company announced.

The company is offering both retail and wholesale space in the 34,000sq ft 5.5MW facility called Cheyenne. It is located within a 20-minute drive from the Las Vegas Strip and a 10-minute drive from the Red Rock recreation area.

Cobalt announced the start of construction of this facility in August 2012. Its other Las Vegas site is a wholesale-grade property within a carrier hotel on Sahara Avenue.

“Our data centers and Las Vegas Peering and Internet Exchange (LV-PIX), which provides superior fiber connectivity, will serve as fundamental infrastructure supporting the development of the growing technology industry in Las Vegas,” Cobalt CEO Mike Ballard said. “We are very excited to be a part of the city’s success and technology diversification.”

The Cheyenne data center’s electrical design is a modular 2(N+1) system. Electrical infrastructure was designed by Harris Consulting Engineers and allows for multiple redundancies in all critical components.

Tom Harris served as the lead engineer on the project. The building's architect was Dan Ballard of Ethos Three Architecture, and the general contractor was Burke Construction Group.
