A second data center has been approved for the Cobalt Data Centre Campus near Newcastle in the UK.

The Tier III facility, developed by Highbridge properties and architecture firm Woods Bagot will cover 3,360 sq m, will be the second data center on the site, and will include four standalone modular data halls, two of which will  cover 960 sq m each and two covering 720 sq m.

Each data hall will contain two cooling systems and will use direct air optimization cooling which "applies ambient air to directly cool the data hall through standard modular air handling units, or a conventional chilled water system using chillers and computer room air conditioning", Cobalt said.

Energy efficiency has been factored into the design, which is expected to meet the BREEAM Excellent rating and the facility will use a natural cooling system, supplemented by backup DX cooling to allow for changes in ambient conditions.

Cobalt's first data center on the site, DC1, will stand alone from DC2, each having its own substation and direct links through four cable links to 80MVA at the National Grid.

Cobalt's DC1 covers 4,262 sq m of technical space, also with four autonomous data halls completed to shell. It received its own BREEAM rating last year.
