CleanArc Data Centers has finally detailed plans for its first project, a large campus in Caroline County, Virginia.
The company this week announced its campus in Caroline County will deliver 200MW by Q3 2026 and an additional 300MW by mid-2027. It will eventually scale to more than 600MW.
“We’re bringing scalable, sustainable infrastructure to the heart of the world’s largest data center market,” the company said in a LinkedIn post.
Renderings on the company’s website suggest the VA1 campus will total six buildings. Update: The company has reached to clarify the design will be three buildings, each with two data halls.
CleanArc was launched early last year by clean energy investment firm 547 Energy. Private equity firm Snowhawk invested in CleanArc in September and is now the company's majority owner.
Led by Vantage Data Centers founder Jim Trout, CleanArc aims to develop hyperscale data center campuses delivering 300MW+, and spanning 200-700-acres.
The company had previously mentioned a 600MW, 650-acre campus in Virginia somewhere along Interstate 95 between Ashburn and Richmond, without providing much more detail.
Caroline County, located south of Fredericksburg and North of Richmond, hasn’t traditionally hosted many data centers. But as developers and operators scramble for capacity amid the AI boom, several projects are potentially coming to the area.
Amazon is developing the Orrock Tech Campus (since renamed the Mattameade Tech campus) – a 920-acre site set to host 4.5 million sq ft across 11 data centers. The company was recently granted an economic deal with Spotsylvania and Caroline Counties for the project.
Avaio also has Caroline County data center projects planned in Ruther Glen and Ladysmith.
Last year the Caroline County Board of Supervisors adopted a new zoning district, the Planned Innovation Research and Technology Park District, in which data centers are a permitted use.
Founded in 2022, Snowhawk is a private investment firm targeting investments in cloud, connectivity, and technology services.
547 is the clean energy investment platform of Quantum Energy Partners, a provider of private equity capital to the energy sector.
Trout also founded data center consultancy Proferian and CoreSite, and previously held roles at Digital Realty and ProLogis. He was president and CEO of CoreSite when it was founded as CRG West. Trout left Vantage in 2013.
