The land under the US government's spy agency's new data center in Utah is undergoing a process of being annexed to a neighboring city to secure a reliable water supply for the future facility.

Officials of the City of Bluffdale have approved annexation of the property at Camp Williams ÔÇô site of the National Security Agency's $1.2bn construction project, Utah News reports. If the annexation is complete, the currently unincorporated property will add 500 acres to the city's size.

If the property does not get folded into Bluffdale's territory, it will not be considered a priority water customer in case the city experiences a water shortage. Its current status gives it a "surplus priority" customer designation.

There are a few more steps left in the annexation process. One is a formal request that needs to be filed by the Military Installation Development Authority and the other is resolution of concerns by a county where the property currently lies.

Bluffdale is in Salt Lake County and the data center site is in the neighboring Utah County. The annexation would mean a part of Utah County would become a part of its neighbor and Utah has not yet issued an approval.
