Citrix Systems, one of the two leading virtualization companies, has verified that AMD’s latest SeaMicro SM15000 server is fully compatible with its XenServer 6 hypervisor.
The server went through a product verification program by Citrix to ensure compatibility. When it first announced SM15000 in September, AMD said the microserver was compatible with both XenServer and the hypervisor by Citrix’ arch nemesis and leader in the server-virtualization space VMware.
Andrew Feldman, general manager and corporate VP of AMD’s data center solutions group, said AMD had worked closely with Citrix to ensure customers could deploy an integrated Citrix-AMD solution. “The combination of Citrix XenServer and the highest density, most power efficient SeaMicro server is a winning combination that takes data center efficiency and management to the next level of performance.”
Before AMD bought SeaMicro in March, Feldman served as the server-maker’s CEO.
Versions of SM15000 featuring both AMD and Intel processors will be available, although the company chose to put the Intel Xeon-based version on the market first.
AMD pitches the SeaMicro servers to companies looking to consolidate IT onto a highly dense and energy efficient platform. SeaMicro motherboards have only three components, CPU, DRAM and ASIC, which allows the company to make them small and use less power.
Nodes within the microserver are interconnected via SeaMicro’s Freedom Supercompute Fabric technology, which AMD said was the main reason it bought the company for. The fabric enables interconnects with 1.28-terabit-per-second bandwidth.
SeaMicro motherboards also have advanced power-optimization features, such as turning off unneeded CPU and chipset functions.
