Citibank to build world's greenest data center Further to the earlier story BAM to build Citibank's Frankfurt data center' (zdtweb.com 5/7)), Citibank has formally announced it is to build a EUR 170 million data center, which it is claiming will be the world's most environmentally friendly facilities.
The data center will be the group's biggest outside the US, housing half of the 8,000 servers that support the group's operations in Europe, the Middle East and in Africa.
This investment is part of Citigroup's EUR50 billion worldwide climate protection program, which was announced by Chief Executive Charles Prince in May, Harnett added.
Under this program the group targets reducing its greenhouse gas emissions worldwide by 10% within 2011. Additionally, the group will also invest in, and extend loans to, companies that wants to upgrade infrastructure in a move to reduce its "ecological footprint."
This is an example of our commitment to Frankfurt and Germany and is a major investment for the corporation, Harnett said.
Completion of the center is expected in March 2008. The target is for the center to save 25% of the energy consumption normally used by such a data center.
