European mobile device retailer Carphone Warehouse is building a €6 million data center in the Citywest business park, Dublin, to support its upcoming cellular network service.

According to the Irish Times, the facility will open its doors in January, while the network will launch in July 2015.

The hardware for the project is supplied by German infrastructure vendor Mvneco and Chinese IT giant Huawei.

New business

Carphone Warehouse, soon to be renamed Dixons Carphone after its merger with Dixons Retail, operates 1,700 mobile device stores across Europe, 91 of them in Ireland.

The company’s plans for a new mobile network were first reported in July 2014. Since it’s only spending €30 million on the whole project, Carphone Warehouse will rely on radio masts owned by Three, a subsidiary of Hutchison Whampoa, under a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) arrangement.

According to earlier reports, the network will offer traditional mobile services as well as a new breed of connectivity services for the Internet of Things.

“Our plan is to offer a highly innovative, next-generation service that is currently not available in today’s mobile market,” said Peter Scott, managing director for Carphone Warehouse Ireland. “To fully realize this, and to support the massive amounts of data generated by consumer mobile use, we require dependable, future-proof technology.”

He added that the project will create up to 50 full-time jobs in the region.

The yet unnamed network aspires to gain six percent share of the British mobile connectivity market in its first five years.

Carphone Warehouse already operates an MVNO service in Britain on Vodafone’s network under the Talkmobile brand – however due to the conditions of the deal, these customers essentially belong to Vodafone.
