Airline carrier British Airways (BA) will offer Starlink for free in-flight WiFi from next year.

It's the latest in-flight WiFi deal that Elon Musk's SpaceX subsidiary, Starlink, has secured.

BA confirmed that the service will be available to all its customers, irrespective of what cabin they're traveling in. The airline said the offering is part of its £7 billion ($9.2bn) transformation plan.

As part of the agreement, BA will offer the WiFi service across its fleet of more than 500 aircraft, which also includes Aer Lingus, Iberia, and Vueling.

The carrier already offers WiFi for customers but it is only free for business class. It is provided by GoGo’s 2Ku-based satellite.

At present, Starlink has around 8,900 satellites in orbit. Starlink claims that its in-flight WiFi offers latency of less than 99ms, and speeds of up to 500Mbps.

SpaceX set up a dedicated division for its in-flight connectivity service in 2022 called Starlink Aviation.

Starlink already has other in-flight connectivity agreements in place, including with United Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and Air France. The company is also nearing a deal to provide its in-flight Internet service for Saudi Airlines.

Several other airlines, including airBaltic, Zipair Tokyo, and JSX, have also chosen Starlink Aviation. JSX’s entire Embraer ERJ fleet is already fitted with the system.

The partnership is the latest high-profile UK contract that Starlink has secured, following separate connectivity deals with Virgin Media O2 and BT's EE.
