There are a number of new data center projects gaining attention for their size around the world. FOCUS decided in its latest edition to pay homage to these, documenting their various build models and use cases. See the start of our selection of key projects below, and keep an eye out through the rest of the week for more big builds.

 

 

Intergate Manhattan (IG.M)

 

Location: 375 Pearl Street, Manhattan, US

Operator: Sabey Data Centers

Size: 1.1m sq ft high rise retrofit, over 32 storeys. 18-40MW

Construction: Sabey Construction

Use: Multi-tenant data center facility for powered shell and turnkey users

Build: The existing 1.1m sq ft building was constructed in the 1970s and is being completely refitted with new utility infrastructure. Will be launched in October 2013

Power: At Phase I, IG.M will have 18MW of power with an ultimate capacity of 40MW. Two 3MW backup generators provide redundancy for turnkey data center floors and two 2.5MW generators support the base building. Offers 72 hours of back up in total and has 255,000 gallons of fuel on site

Cooling: Hot-aisle containment with a water-side economizer on turnkey floors. Power shell floors configured to customer specifications Interesting facts: Located adjacent to the New York Police Department and has enforced secured vehicular access

 

SG3 IBX

Location: One North, Singapore

Operator: Equinix

Size: 385,000sq ft gross floor

Construction: JTC Corporation

Use: Colocation, interconnection and peering, direct cross connect between networks especially for the financial services community

Build: Investment of US$50m to $55m. Will hold 5,000 cabinets over multiple phases. Phase I will provide 1,000 cabinets and is scheduled to open Q2 2014

Cooling: Cold-aisle containment infrastructure supporting higher power density installations for more efficient cooling. Recycled NEWater also used for cooling purposes

Interesting facts: Connected to Equinix SG1 at One North by a dedicated fiber network. Will use motion-activated LED lights, electrically commutated fans. Will also use a solar power system and be compliant with guidelines introduced by the Monetary Authority of Singapore in July 2012

 

T5@Colorado

 

Location: Colorado, US

Operator: T5 Data Centers

Size: 100,000 sq ft expandable to 200,000 sq ft

Construction: T5 Data Centers

Use: First building, CS-1, designed as a multi-tenant wholesale colocation facility, delivering up to 15MW of critical power under a phased delivery

Build: The initial building will be 100,000sq ft. Site work and construction on T5’s 64 acres of land is underway with delivery scheduled for August 2014. The project is estimated to cost US$800m

Cooling: Will use up to 8,500 hours/year of free cooling in conjunction with indirect evaporative, air or water-cooled chiller systems

Power: Up to 100MW of redundantly fed power to the campus

Interesting facts: Has the ability to offer federal New Markets Tax Credits and Enterprise Zone benefits to lower customers’ total costs of occupancy
