IBM is expected to announce it is to expand its Boulder campus data center operations under the previously announced Project Big Green.'
Dan Willis, spokesman for IBM's Boulder campus said: "There's a real need on the client side for data center space," Willis said. "And Boulder's location puts it in a favorable light. ... It's nice to have a western location."
In a press release obtained buy a local paper, IBM said it will employ state-of-the-art technology to erect a "green" data center that customers will use to outsource such computing operations as Web hosting and data storage.
The 80,000-square-foot expansion will bring the total data center facilities on the Boulder campus to more than 300,000 square feet, and represent one of the largest IBM data center operations in the world.
The new Boulder data center will use fewer computing systems and employ energy-efficient power and cooling technology. The expanded facility is scheduled to begin "boarding" customers in April 2008.
Big Blue said it secured more than $700,000 in "incentive funding" from Colorado and the city of Boulder. The financial sweeteners played a role in IBM's decision to locate the new data center in Boulder, according to IBM.
