The city government of Bern in Switzerland has applied to extend its data center contract at an NTS facility in Bern.
The city of Bern has leased space at a colocation facility at NTS since 2014. The term of the lease was set at five years, with an option to extend for a further five years.
The municipal council is requesting a commitment credit of 1.44 million francs (US$1.6m) from the city council to renew the lease, which expires on May 31, 2025.
The city council expects that applications will be moved to the cloud and therefore, fewer IT services will be needed in the data center in the next three to five years.
The council said: “In view of the anticipated changes in the IT landscape and taking into account the effort, costs, complexity, and risks, a further extension of the existing contract with NTS for five years appears to be the most sensible implementation option at this point in time.”
The city of Bern has an additional data center, its primary facility, which is located in the Beer House and was built in 2013. Further details of this facility are unknown.
NTS Workspace AG has two sites in Bern - Colobern North and Colobern South - and one site in Zurich. The specifications of its facilities are not known.
The small Internet provider operates a Swiss-wide fiber optic backbone network and was founded 15 years ago by Niklaus Hug, Simon Brunner, Thomas Dellsperger, and Lorenz Müller.
Two other operators in Bern include senseLAN and Swisscom.
