A ballistic attack has struck a data center owned by the Ukrainian telecommunications company Datagroup in Kyiv, rendering the site inoperable.
The site was struck yesterday during an overnight ballistic attack. Datagroup said that restoration and further operation of the infrastructure are “impossible.”
The strike was part of a wider attack, which resulted in the destruction of a shopping and entertainment center, and damage to a medical facility and 25-story residential building.
A 21-year-old woman was killed in the strike, and eight others were injured, according to the Kyiv Post, but no Datagroup employees were harmed.
Datagroup said the attack has left the data center “completely disabled,” with restoration and further operation “impossible.”
The company said it would continue to provide services to customers from backup sites.
Local journalists have reported that Ukraine received no early warning of the attack from the US.
Both Russia and Ukraine have stepped up attacks on each other's digital infrastructure in recent weeks. Russia has launched multiple drone strikes against infrastructure in Ukraine, including an attack on Kyivstar’s headquarters.
Ukraine, for its part, has struck back with multiple attacks on Russian-owned digital infrastructure, including strikes on data centers owned by Yandex.
Russian officials have been discussing mitigating measures for attacks on its data centers, ranging from building “doomsday” data centers to siting facilities in disused coal mines or friendly neighboring territories.
The conflict between Ukraine and Russia has been ongoing since 2014, with significant escalation in 2022.
