Swedish ISP Bahnhof is known for its data center design ÔÇô it is the company behind the sci-fi looking Pionen data center.

It is drilling further into the data center with a new company called Modular Data Centers Stockholm AB (MDC Stockholm). 

The company is formed by the entrepreneurs behind Bahnhof who are partnering with steel maker SSAB (Swedish Steel AB) and a number of other companies and organizations for the containerized solutions which they say will have a sci-fi visual appeal using Swedish technology.

"The design and engineering of the modules are essential parts of the concept. The inspiration comes from science fiction, military facilities and the latest technology for the IT industry," MDC Stockholm said on its site.

"The design is made by Swedish company SplitVision Design AB, an engineering firm specialized in transforming futuristic vision into durable, high-performance reality that can be rationally produced and brought to demanding customers."

MDC Stockholm said it will inaugurate the first of its new MDC Kista 1 modular data centers next month in a "Silicon Valley like" technology park in Kista, just outside of Stockholm.

The first MDC Kista 1 module will be surrounding by tech players such as Ericsson, which has its global headquarters in the part, as well as the KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Swedish Institute of Computer Science. It is also home to Microsoft's, Oracle's and IBM's Swedish offices.

Modular Data Centers Stockholm AB said the data center should be ready for operation in November or December this year.

The 40ft modules can be used by companies wanting to follow the scalable practices undertaken in Bahnhof's own data centers, according to Bahnof chairman and CEO of Modular Data Centers Stockholm Jon Karlung.

"One problem with data centers it that they require heavy investments in capital and human resources," Karlung said.

"When Bahnhof needed more capacity we wished to add this in a modular form to ensure sustained growth capabilities in a flexible and cost-efficient way.

"Since this is not Bahnhof's core business as an ISP we decided to place business risk outside the firm but with Bahnof as a strategic partner."

SSAB is providing materials for the containers. It specializes in materials used by armoured vehicles, banks, embassies and armed forces. 

Each module is free standing and has been designed by Lindstrand Technologies, the company behind the Beagle 2 spacecraft which used a space parachute designed by company founder Per Linstrand.

The bullet proof data center built in Sweden comes in four parts, a server module (a room for 35 full rack cabinet equivalents, conventional cooling module, plug and play power module for backup operations with a built-in UPS and standby diesel generators and a command module, used for meetings. Optical fiber comes pre installed.

Altogether the solution takes up 15 x 30 ft. 

MDC Stockholm said it can deliver the modules in five separate 40ft containers within two weeks but time from order to delivery is three months.
