Amazon Web Services (AWS) is exploring the development of a data center at a natural gas plant outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
First reported by TribLive, Amazon is potentially looking at developing a data center campus next to Homer City Redevelopment, a planned natural gas plant near Homer City in Indiana County.
“As part of our commitment to invest at least $20 billion in Pennsylvania, we are evaluating multiple sites across the commonwealth. While we don’t have a definitive agreement in place, we are in discussions with Homer City Redevelopment,” an Amazon spokesman said this week of talks with the company that owns the property.
TribLive broke the news after details were revealed in emails via freedom of information requests.
Full details of any data centers planned by Amazon haven’t been shared.
Located 50 miles (80 km) east of Pittsburgh, the 4.5GW natural gas-fired power plant is under construction on a 3,200-acre site in Center and Blacklick townships. The plant is due to come online in 2028 and could be the largest natural gas-powered plant in the country.
The site previously hosted the Homer City Generating Station, a 2GW coal power plant in operation from 1969 to 2023. The facility was the largest coal-burning power plant in Pennsylvania. Plans for the new gas plant were announced last year, with data centers named as a targeted customer. Knighthead Capital Management is helping finance the project.
Homer City Redevelopment declined to comment to the publication.
Amazon has pledged to invest some $20 billion in Pennsylvania across multiple campuses.
AWS has been looking to develop in Salem Township since early 2024. The company acquired an existing data center from Talen Energy and around 1,200 acres of land adjacent to the latter’s nuclear power plant. The cloud company is aiming to develop up to 15 buildings there.
The company has also been looking to develop in Falls and Kline Townships.
