Australian data center company Viridis Green Data Centres has secured approval for the development of a 1MW facility in the city of Burnie, Tasmania.

According to Viridis, the data center will be built in the Burnie Central Business District and will be brought online by the first half of 2027.

It is intended to be a Tier III-quality data center, and will span 1,215 sqm (13,078 sq ft), and use free-air cooling.

There are few data centers located in Tasmania, which is an island state of Australia. Most of these facilities are located around the capital Hobart, a port city on Tasmania’s southeastern coast.

Burnie, by contrast, is on Tasmania’s northern coast, and Data Center Map does not currently list any data centers near that city.

Viridis is a data center provider based in Australia that focuses on offering renewable facilities. It has a presence along Australia’s East Coast, and data centers in Townsville, Brisbane, Hunter Valley, and Adelaide.

Viridis is not the only operator interested in Tasmania. The local city council of Launceston, located in northern Tasmania, gave the green light for Firmus to build a 90MW data center in St Leonards last September.
