AT&T announced this week that it's working with AWS to extend 5G and fiber connectivity to AWS' data centers.
As part of this, US carrier AT&T announced a preview of AWS Interconnect – last mile, which will bring AT&T’s fiber and fixed wireless connectivity directly into AWS environments.
The preview of this will be available for customers during the second quarter, confirmed the telco.
The announcement, which was made during Mobile World Congress, builds on last month's strategic agreement that will migrate AT&T workloads to AWS, provide high-capacity fiber connectivity for data centers, and explore satellite technologies via Amazon Leo.
AT&T notes that the use of AWS Interconnect – last mile will enable organizations to build more predictable, resilient architectures for AI‑driven workloads.
The carrier said the purpose of this is to simplify Premises-to-Cloud connectivity, while helping enterprises reduce network complexity.
According to AT&T, AWS Interconnect – last mile embeds AT&T‑delivered connectivity directly into AWS workflows. The carrier said this builds the foundation for the use of AI agents to monitor and manage the AI experience from the user to the cloud.
On top of this, it supports data‑intensive use cases such as real‑time analytics, machine learning, and agentic AI.
"AI does not just need more compute; it needs flatter networks and faster connections,” said Shawn Hakl, SVP & head of product, AT&T Business. “By bringing high‑capacity connectivity closer to cloud platforms, integrating the management of the networks directly into the cloud provisioning process and engineering for resiliency at the metro level, AT&T is helping enterprises streamline their networks, improve performance, security, and scale AI with confidence.”
AT&T said the partnership supports its plans to build an AI-ready network designed to scale performance, including the growth of capacities up to 1.6Tbps across key metro and long‑haul routes.
"We've worked with Amazon to harmonize not just the physical layer, which has previously been available, but also a logical layer, so that as you stand up your Amazon instance, you can provision through your AT&T network, smoothly. It's a harmonized implementation, and it's quick," Hakl told DCD during an MWC meeting.
He explains that AT&T will build more intelligence into that connection over time as more optionality functions emerge.
