Apple has signed a multi-year deal with Google to use the company's AI models and cloud for its consumer devices.

The iPhone company said it will develop Apple Foundation Models based on Google's Gemini models and cloud technology, which will be used for a more personalized Siri and other Apple features.

"After careful evaluation, Apple determined that Google's Al technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and is excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for Apple users," the companies said in a joint statement.

"Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute, while maintaining Apple's industry-leading privacy standards."

Despite being fierce competitors in the consumer space, Apple has long been a Google Cloud customer and is believed to be the platform's single biggest storage customer.

In 2024, the company began using Google's TPU chips to train its AI models. Apple is known to be developing its own server chips.

TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo this week said that those AI server chips are expected to enter mass production in 2H26, "and its own data centers are expected to begin construction and operation in 2027, which may indicate that Apple anticipates significant growth in on-device AI demand starting in 2027."

Apple has struggled to develop its own internal AI tools, and in 2024 added ChatGPT to its Apple Intelligence suite.
