More data centers are being proposed in the Pennsylvania borough of Archbald.

The Scranton Times-Tribune reports that Archbald I LLC filed two zoning permit applications on October 22 to build two data center campuses.

According to the applications, seen by the Tribune, one campus with 18 data center buildings is planned for land north of Staback Park on Eynon Jermyn Road.

Another is planned to host four data centers near the border of Archbald and Jermyn, above the juncture of Eynon Jermyn Road and Washington Avenue.

The larger campus would total around 410 acres, with the smaller campus totaling around 66 acres. Each of the 22 buildings would have around 150,000 sq ft (13,935 sqm) of floorspace, totaling 3.3 million sq ft (306,580 sqm).

Details on the company operating behind Archbald I are unclear.

Archbald is a borough in Lackawanna County, northeast Pennsylvania. Not traditionally known as a major data center hotspot, Pennsylvania is seeing a large number of projects being proposed, with several in the Archbald/Lackawanna County area.

The borough already has had five data center campuses proposed, and eight across the entirety of Lackawanna County: two in Jessup, and one spanning Clifton and Covington townships. Proposals for a project in Blakely were recently withdrawn.

In Archbald, projects include the proposed Project Boson (formerly the Archbald Data & Energy Center), Project Gravity, and the Wildcat Ridge development.

If all the projects come to fruition, Eynon Jermyn Road could have nearly 4.73 million sq ft (439,431 sqm) of data center space across some 29 buildings at full build-out.

The Tribune notes the latest application is the first since the borough council held a special meeting in October to consider adopting an ordinance regulating data centers and restricting where they could be built.

A motion to consider the ordinance failed to receive a second, stopping it from coming to a vote. Many locals spoke out against the ordinance, wanting further restrictions.
