Chip packaging and test services company Amkor Technology has broken ground on its new campus in Peoria, Arizona.

Comprising multiple buildings and including 750,000 sq ft (69,677 sqm) of cleanroom, the first factory on the site is expected to be completed in mid-2027, with production slated for early 2028.

Amkor has previously said it would invest $2 billion in the outsourced semiconductor assembly and test company (OSAT) plant in Peoria, supported by $407 million in direct funding from the CHIPS and Science Act.

However, it has since been reported that Amkor’s investment in the campus could total $7bn, creating as many as 3,000 jobs at the site, with the company also committing to work with educational institutions in the state to develop talent locally and across the US.

In October 2024, Amkor announced it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with TSMC, which will see Amkor provide the chipmaker with turnkey advanced packaging and test services at the forthcoming OSAT plant.

Amkor has also secured Nvidia as a lead customer, and in November 2023, announced it had signed a deal with Apple to package its Apple Silicon at the Peoria facility, which TSMC will produce at its nearby Phoenix fab.
