US airline carrier American Airlines and mobile carrier AT&T have announced plans to offer in-flight WiFi from next year.

American said the service will be available on more than two million flights a year, beginning in January 2026. The service will be free for American Airlines' AAdvantage loyalty program members.

The service itself will be sponsored by AT&T, while American planes will be fitted with Viasat and Intelsat satellite connectivity across roughly 90 percent of its fleet.

In doing so, American will become the latest US airline carrier to carve out a WiFi connectivity deal.

Ahead of the planned launch, American said it carried out a limited-time complimentary WiFi test on select routes, allowing the airline to gauge the strength of its service, which surpassed performance expectations.

By the end of the year, the company said it's "on pace to outfit more than 500 regional aircraft with high-speed WiFi by the end of 2025.

"We’ve been working diligently to outfit our aircraft with best-in-class high-speed WiFi and together with AT&T are proud to offer those services at no cost to our most loyal customers," said Heather Garboden, chief customer officer, American Airlines.

Other US airline carriers have penned WiFi connectivity deals of their own, including United Airlines. United signed a partnership with SpaceX subsidiary Starlink last year to provide a free onboard WiFi service on its mainline and regional aircraft fleet.

Meanwhile, Delta Air Lines chose Hughes Network Systems to provide its own in-flight WiFi service back in 2023.
