AMD has continued to extend its run of acquisitions with the purchase of AI software optimization startup Brium for an undisclosed amount.

As was also reported by CRN this week, AMD has acquired the employees of Untether AI, a company that has been developing energy-efficient AI inference chips.

Brium, which was founded in 2024 and appears to have still been in stealth prior to the acquisition, essentially enables companies to run AI software on hardware it had not originally been designed for.

Announcing the deal, AMD said the startup’s “world-class compiler and AI software experience” will strengthen the chipmaker’s ability to deliver “highly optimized AI solutions across the entire stack.”

Writing on LinkedIn, co-founder and former CEO and later CIO of Brium Nicolas Vasilache said: “Having our work in compiler technology, model execution frameworks, and inference optimization featured as a highlight of AMD’s AI strategy is the strongest validation of the ideas we pioneered several years ago and brought to fruition at Brium.”

He also thanked Intel CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, who he said was one of the company’s investors.

In its second acquisition of the week, AMD confirmed it was bringing the staff of recently shuttered AI chip startup Untether AI into its fold.

Founded in 2018 in Toronto, Canada, Untether had been developing energy effcient AI inferencing chips using at-memory architecture for Edge and data center environments.

News of the sale was first disclosed on LinkedIn by Justin Kinsey, president of SBT, an Arizona-based semiconductor recruitment company, who said: “AMD acquired the engineering team and assets of Untether. Not the company, just the people and the tech.”

In a statement to CRN, the first publication to confirm the news, AMD said: “AMD has entered into a strategic agreement to acquire a talented team of AI hardware and software engineers from Untether AI.

“The transaction brings a world-class team of engineers to AMD, focused on advancing the company’s AI compiler and kernel development capabilities as well as enhancing our digital and SoC design, design verification, and product integration capabilities. We are excited to welcome the team’s unique expertise to AMD“

The company declined to disclose the financial terms of the deal.

These two latest deals represent four acquisitions for AMD in as many months, following the purchase of Enosemi at the end of May 2025 and the $4.9bn acquisition of ZT this March, with the division joining the AMD Data Center Solutions business unit led by AMD executive vice president Forrest Norrod.

Regarding the ZT deal, while AMD has kept ZT’s AI systems design businesses, it sold off the manufacturing arm to Sanmina for $3bn.
