Amazon has picked up a $84.5 million stake in AMD thanks to the chip designer's acquisition of ZT Systems.

In a 13-F filing this month, Amazon disclosed its stake in the company, which amounts to 822,234 shares.

In the same filing, the cloud and retail giant said that it owned $16.6m of silicon connectivity company Astera Labs and $13.9m of semiconductor firm Marvell Technology.

Amazon's small stake in AMD resulted from its ownership of a similarly modest stake in ZT Systems, which designs, integrates, manufactures, and deploys servers for companies including Amazon Web Services.

AMD closed its $4.9bn acquisition of ZT this March, with the division joining the AMD Data Center Solutions business unit led by AMD executive vice president Forrest Norrod.

The company plans to offer end-to-end AI solutions utilizing a combination of AMD hardware, from CPUs and GPUs to networking silicon.

But, while AMD will keep the AI systems design businesses at ZT, it has sold off the manufacturing arm to Sanmina for $3bn.
