Amazon has disclosed a $36.7 million stake in US quantum computing firm IonQ.
According to a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Amazon owns 854,207 shares in the company, the largest publicly disclosed investment by a hyperscaler in a quantum hardware firm, per a report from Quantum Insider.
Other regulatory documents filed by Amazon indicate that the company has had a stake in IonQ since 2024.
Founded in 2015, IonQ develops systems with trapped ion technology, and hopes to combine its compute and networking research with Oxford Ionics' ion-trap technology manufactured on standard semiconductor chips.
In June 2025, IonQ announced plans to acquire UK rival Oxford Ionics for $1.08 billion. The deal will primarily involve shares of IonQ common stock, with only around $10m coming in the form of cash.
Earlier that same month, IonQ completed its acquisition of photonic interconnect and quantum memory company Lightsynq. That followed an announcement from May, when the company said it would acquire Capella Space with plans to develop the world’s first space-based quantum-secure communications network.
