Amazon has seemingly dropped interest in a proposed data center in Tucson, Arizona.

Blue Owl-owned Beale Infrastructure is looking to develop a 290-acre data center campus known as Project Blue in Pima County. Reports suggest up to ten buildings totaling 2 million sq ft (185,805 sqm) and 600MW are planned. City documents note Amazon Web Services (AWS) was long interested in being the end user of the site.

However, Pima County Supervisor Matt Heinz and Tucson City Councilman Paul Cunningham told 13News this week that they have heard from multiple sources that the cloud and e-commerce giant will no longer be the end user for Project Blue, but there are now potentially seven or eight different potential end-user tenants.

Tucson.com reports Amazon pulled out after a change in proposed cooling technology was deemed unacceptable. The project is now set to use air cooling instead of water cooling after local officials denied the project access to the city’s reclaimed water system.

Developer Beale Infrastructure told local press that while Amazon showed interest, it never had an agreement in place.

“Beale can only speak on behalf of our project, and not to the intention of other companies. Rather, it is up to any companies seeking to come into a market to announce that for themselves.”

Social media firm Meta has been named as a potential tenant of the site.
